Our Story

Believe started with a real little girl.

The musical is inspired by Kayla Walker's childhood growing up in an interracial home and not always having the knowledge or resources to understand and care for her natural hair.

Those experiences shaped the story of a young Black girl navigating bullying, identity and self-doubt while discovering that the things that make her different are also part of her power.

Believe is the experience Kayla wishes she could have seen as a child.
Why Believe Matters

Young Black girls deserve to see themselves at the center of the story.

Believe uses music and theatre to create a night of joy, education, empowerment and representation for Black girls, Black children, mothers and caregivers.

01

See yourself.

Natural hair, Black childhood and cultural identity are celebrated on stage.

02

Build confidence.

The story addresses bullying, self-confidence, perseverance and finding your voice.

03

Learn together.

Families can talk about natural hair, identity, empathy and how to affirm Black children.

04

Remember the night.

Our goal is an unforgettable live experience a young girl carries with her long after curtain call.
